Today’s Book Spotlight is on Maggot Moon by: Sally Gardner.
That’s what his classmates sing at him every day. They also tease Standish for his two mis-matched eyes. That all makes him different. And you don’t want to be different while you’re living in the Motherland.
But it got better for him once Hector showed up. Hector of the perfect grades and hair didn’t think he was stupid. Hector showed him real kindness and became his one true friend, even though they were so different. But that all changed when Standish accidentally kicked their football over the wall in his back yard and Hector ran after it. Shortly after, Hector and his entire family disappeared, along with Standish’s safety at school.
Something that happened on the other side of that wall, and Standish is only just discovering what it is. All he knows is that it has something to do with a Moon Man and that it makes the government very, very angry.
This book is an alternate universe where England has become a dystopia run by a government similar to Nazi Germany. It’s very dark and bleak, but worth the read if that’s something you can handle. There isn’t much action at the beginning, but the author’s writing style keeps you on the edge of your seat as you slowly try to unravel the mystery that Standish has gotten himself involved in.
