Today’s Book Spotlight! is on Seraphina by: Rachel Hartman.

397px-Seraphina_book_cover_(US_addition)Tensions are rising in the kingdom of Gorred. It’s almost the anniversary of the peace treaty between dragons and humans and the capital city is preparing to host an envoy of dragon representatives to help celebrate the occasion. Everything seems like it’s going according to plan until the crown prince of the realm is found in the woods nearby with his head missing, a clear sign of a dragon attack.

Suddenly, the peace is threatened. Anti-dragon sympathizers are rising up by the dozens, the dragons themselves are getting antsy, and one girl is caught in between them all. Her name is Seraphina Dombeigh and she is a music instructor and daughter to a lawyer specializing in dragon-human affairs. But she’s more than that.

Seraphina is guarding a secret. If her true nature is discovered by either dragons or humans, her very life would be in danger. And yet it is this secret that makes her the most qualified person in the kingdom to save the peace treaty between the two species and avoid an all-out war. The question is, whether or not she is brave and smart enough to be able to pull it off.

Seraphina is a fantasy book with equal parts political intrigue and adventure. If you enjoy reading about foreign worlds with fantastic creatures and magic, you’ll definitely want to pick this book up. There is also an element of romance for those of you who might be interested in that. This book is also a Louisiana Teen Reader’s Choice Award nominee.
