I usually don’t do the same author nearly back to back, but I couldn’t help it. I’d been wanting to read this book since it was published and I was only just now able to check it out. Today’s Book Spotlight! is Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.
Everyone likes Simon Snow, but Cath is the only one that lives it. She’s a fanfiction writer and she spends most of her time writing pages and pages of alternate realities for Simon Snow to live out. Her twin sister Wren is her co-author and editor. Everything’s going fine until they head off to college.
No one in college seems to be as into Simon Snow as Cath is, including her sister Wren. She feels increasingly isolated, afraid of everyone, especially her room mate Reagan who looks like she could eat Cath for breakfast. And on top of that, Cath’s father starts to have trouble at home and with her fiction writing professor. It’s almost too much to handle and the urge to drop out of college is tempting.
But Cath meets Levi at college and Levi is different. He’s cute, he’s always smiling, and he takes an interest in Cath’s Simon Snow fanfiction in the way that no one else has so far. The only problem is, Levi is Reagan’s boyfriend and is therefore off limits to Cath. Or so she thinks.
Fangirl is a coming of age story about finding the balance between adolescence and adulthood. It’s also a story about learning to let yourself love and to stop being afraid of everything with the help of your family and friends. And it’s a story about fanfiction.
